Asthma and Allergy Awareness Month: For many, May means spending time outdoors and enjoying beautiful spring weather. For others, it means watery eyes, sneezing, coughing and clogged nasal passages. If you have these symptoms but haven't been diagnosed with a cause, talk to your doctor about being tested.

Go for Homegrown: Next time you need to purchase produce, consider the local farmers' market instead of the grocery store. Fruits and veggies grown locally have fewer costs associated with transportation. That translates to goods news for your wallet and the environment, too.

Gourmet cheese shop adds to Star Market's charm

One of the only full-service, large-scale, family owned grocery stores remaining locally is Star Market in Salinas ~ a real benefit to the community since 1960. Star Market carries all the local wines, with knowledgeable oenophile Victor Kong(also the store's managing partner) always there to offer a perfect pairing. And now you can add Specialty Cheese Shoppe to the list of artisanal offers. The shop opened this week inside Star Market, and is run by local food maven Michael Burke, a winemaker of some renown who has been involved in the gourmet cheese business since 1973. His move to Star Market marks the beginning of a new venture for Burke, who opened the original Carmel Cheese Shop years ago.

Star Market is at 1275 S. Main St. at Blanco Road. It's open Mon.-Sat. from 8:30am-8:30pm and on Sunday from 9 am-8pm.

There's more to being a dad than earning a living and being an advisor to teenagers. Dads already knew that, but researchers just figured it out. According to researchers in the Fatherhood Project at the Families & Work Institute, interacting with dad is crucial for child development. Spending time with your infant or toddler will influence how they relate to other people later in their lives, and how they view the world at large. Dads often tell family stories to children, giving them an anchor to their family history as they grow and experience life's challenge for themselves.

You gather outdoors, a table covered in red and white checkered cloth, loaded with hot dogs and corn-on-the cob, a glorious azure sky above. If that describes the setting, it takes one word to describe the activity: Picnic.

The earliest picnics: medieval hunting feats in England, according to http://www.foodtimeline.org/ The feasts come before the hunt.

Some historians note that picnics in France began as a dinner, eaten outdoors, and any attendee was supposed to contribute food. Following the French Revolution in 1789, parks were opened for picnics, signaling a new freedom.

London has its own claim to picnic legend. Those who were wealthy formed the Picnic Society, a group that promoted social affairs, in which guests would supply food and some type of entertainment.
